What I do with your data

The short version: I use your email address to send you OMGHG, I look at which links get clicked so I know what is worth writing, and I never sell, rent or share any of it.

Who is responsible

Felix Edge-Partington is the data controller. You can reach me at omghg@felixep.com — a real address, read by a person.

What I collect, and why

Your email address, because there is no newsletter without it. You give it when you subscribe and confirm it by clicking a link, so there is a record of you actually agreeing.

Optional details about your work — role, organisation, its size, sector and country. Asked after you have confirmed, and genuinely optional. Leave them blank and nothing changes about what you receive.

How you use the newsletter — which links you clicked and how you answered a poll. This tells me which writing is worth your time. I deliberately do not measure whether you opened an issue: that is done with a hidden image, and some mail apps load those before you have read anything, so the number would not be true.

Where you came from — the post or page that brought you here, so I know what is working.

Your IP address and browser at signup, as evidence the subscription was genuine and to prevent abuse. Deleted on the schedule below.

Why I am allowed to

Sending you the newsletter: your consent, given by confirming your subscription. You can withdraw it at any time, and the unsubscribe link in every email does exactly that.

Measuring how it performs: legitimate interests — I cannot write anything worth reading without knowing what is read. You can object to this without unsubscribing, and if you do, nothing about you is measured and you still get every issue.

Taking payment: performance of a contract, if you subscribe to the paid edition.

Who else sees it

Only the services needed to run it: the database host (in the EU), the website host, the email delivery service, and Stripe if you pay. Each is bound by written terms to process data only on my instructions.

Your details are never sold, rented, shared or traded. The entire point of running this myself is that the list belongs to the people on it and to me.

How long it is kept

While you are subscribed, plus twelve months after you leave — then everything identifying you is erased automatically. Records of clicks and poll answers lose their technical details after twenty-five months.

If you unsubscribe, a one-way scrambled version of your address is kept indefinitely so you are never accidentally added back. It cannot be turned back into an email address or used to contact you.

What you can ask for

  • A copy of everything held about you.
  • Correction of anything wrong.
  • Deletion — everything identifying you goes.
  • To stop being measured while still receiving the newsletter.
  • To stop receiving it, any time, one click, no questions.

Email omghg@felixep.comand you will get a reply. If you are not satisfied you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If this changes in a way that matters, I will say so in an issue rather than quietly updating the page.
